Becoming a Better Songwriter

Becoming a Better Songwriter

Okay, so for years I have been writing songs. They started out as poems, and eventually I wanted to turn them into something else. So, I figured I would write songs. I was always looking at websites containing information about how to become a better songwriter. There was so many songwriting programs I looked into. But just recently, I learned that, in all honesty, the only way to become a better songwriter, is to write songs. Sure, there are plenty of websites out there that contain helpful information, but no one can really teach you how to write a song. Everyone has there own way to write a song, and from writing daily, you eventually learn your own way of writing. Just at the beginning of last year, Im going to be honest, my songs sucked. And I knew that. But, I also knew that everyone has to start somewhere. Come fall, I started getting serious about my songwriting, and tried to write at least one song a day. My songs began improving, but much slower than I had hoped. So, as many of you may know the saying ‘art inspires art’, I began trying to write like my number one idol, Ryan Tedder. Almost instantly, my songwriting improved. A lot. I was almost shocked by my improvement. So, I believe knowing how you want to write is the first step to good songwriting. Then, you actually have to write. So, start with knowing how you want to sound, and then try to make it come to life. And don’t worry if it doesn’t work out at first, it takes a lot of time and patience. Good luck, and thanks for reading!

  1. I agree. In art we definitely learn by doing, perhaps more than in other areas, which do lend themselves more to being taught. Enjoyed this post – keep at it, and best of luck with your dreams!
